Helston
Just back from Helston in Cornwall after experiencing Flora Day & the Furry Dance celebrations. Wow!! Something about a town that fully embraces its traditions and presents them at their best. premises all around town were bedecked in greenery. There was a Market down the main drag, and thousands of visitors. First up was a fairly contemporary addition to the traditional event; what I would best describe as a ‘theatrically’ inspired ‘Hal An Tow’ mummers play full of the usual green faces, dragons, hobby horses and lots of noise. We then watched the children’s Furry dance which ran for about two hundred metres around the streets. The brass band made the hairs on yer arms stand up. Then, under blue skies, the adults Furry dance which weaved in and out of houses and all around the town. Moving, stunning and brilliant!
